The weather was finally breaking after a long period of winds and the window was only for 2 days. I really wanted to go on the 2nd day, Thursday, but had no takers. Several were already going on their own boats. I eventually put a post on Facebook for a free trip and had 3 takers within 5 minutes. We headed out toward the Main Pass cutoffs stopping at the FH7 Jumbo Barge on the way in 135' of water. Conditions were really nice and with winter weather coming, I made the decision to retrieve the Water Quality Recorder here which was scheduled to come out within a week anyway. Visibility was much better than when it was deployed and I was able to get a Scamp Grouper bonus. Not a very big one but very tasty nonetheless. After that we went to the MP198 Cutoff in 200' of water where I lost a really nice size Scamp at the bottom. She got me tangled up on the Rig and I had to detach my cable. I got her on the Stringer which I just recently started using without a tether and I just let go of it realizing I messed up. Rather than get in trouble with her, I retrieved my spear and headed up. I was in a 3 level deco so I passed on an AJ and opted for a Mangrove Snapper. After that, we went to MP279 to get the 3 fishermen hooked up on AJs. I made a dive there and came across a really nice AJ, probably around 100 lbs. But he was smart and a brute and was able to wrap the leg and break off. He must have bent my shaft a little cause then I had a Scamp break off and missed an easy shot on an Ocean Trigger. Then I watched a Mangrove swim by at my safety stop while my gun was unloaded. It just wasn't my day for Spearfishing. But a nice weather day on the Gulf is always a great day and we all really enjoyed it.
